- Rural means self-reliance
- for those who choose (as we may in this country) to live, work, or play in it. There is no nearby hospital, grocery store, movie theater, cable box, or beat cop. As a result, rural means plan to survive, network with neighbors (if any) and family, and expect hardship. As is often said in those parts, "Your shotgun is your sheriff, and your water well and garden hose are your fire department." Not coincidentally, the cost of rural living is much lower, taxes are usually lower, and the freedom to do whatever you want is higher. Why would we want to change that? With all respect to the Kim's tragedy, there are similar events every day in rural areas, where even a car wreck may not get medical response till 20-30 minutes or more vs. the common 5-8 minutes in a city. Cities are economically capable of immensely successful, interdependent, systematic, safety nets, except, and unless, they have to subsidize rural services. But people also suffer tragic deaths in cities, perhaps for different reasons - overcrowding, insanity, drugs, criminality, disease, congestion, and rat race/cell phone distraction. Wallowing in cell phones as the solution is a waste of bandwidth.
