Frankenpine: Not always economics
Locally, we have an ongoing battle for cell phone coverage in the Lake George region of NYS's Adirondack mountains. Cell coverage has been railed against, but by a player that might surprise you. Evil cell companies not willing to invest in cell towers? Greedy companies not willing to extend themselves for the amount of profit available? Nope - it's the community itself. It seems some of them are concerned about the aesthetics of a cell tower dropped in the middle of a resort community known for its natural beauty. Cell service providers have gone as far as proposing disguising the cell tower as a giant pine tree, which has been jokingly referred to as "Frankenpine" (http://omega.twoday.net/stories/425284/).

Personally, I've traveled in Europe, saw spectacular vistas while all the time enjoying cell coverage that one only dreams about here in the states, and yet strangely enough, I do not recall seeing any cell towers that ruined a view. Did I see them? Of course you saw cell towers, along with beautiful, giant wind turbines (outside of Stuttgart), but all of that seemed to just offer a wonderful blend of ultramodern juxtaposed with the medieval castles and other historic sights. To deny the safety and convenience of cell communication because it may change the landscape seems ridiculous to me, especially when the parties involved are willing to make concessions to those concerns.
