It's really very easy.
North is the side of the buildings that never get any sun.
2 and 1/2 miles is about 50 blocks.

I'd be happier if you provided distances to me in kilometers though. That way I don't have to convert from those outdated miles things.

Seriously though, I'll grant that growing up in the country might have given you a better grasp of your spatial orientation than the average city dweller. At least near where you live, and/or over relatively short distances. That doesn't mean that when I tell someone from the country that the place they're looking for is 4 kilometers northeast of here that they have an accurate idea of what that means.
