Google & Java Mobile Apps
I have a Windows Mobile 5.0 phone myself (Verizon's xv6700) and I've had a problem it the past with Google's mobile java apps (specifically Google Mobile Maps).

I came across a workaround on Google Groups (where else, right?) that involved installing IBM's Midlet Manager which solved my Google Maps problem and I'm sure it will allow you to run Gmail Mobile on your phone.

Happy searching....
