Revenge of the Applet
Lets recognize that Google has taken what we call an Applet and turned it into an application. You can do this with less than ten lines of Java code. What you potentially loose is the management of code that you get with applets which get updated through the browser.

However, owing to the criminally minded at Microsoft, applet support on the most prevalent browser (IE) is far from industry standard. I continue being outraged at Microsoft's theft of University of California Berkelely code and company management's refusal to pay 800 million for that theft - as directed by multiple courts - choosing instead to cripple the IE browser with "click to activate" or the choking of performance of the applet through a scripting wrapper. Active X controls require the security of a scripting wrapper; Java Controls are already secure.

Java Webstart was invented to - in effect - turn Applets into their own browser applications, and free the Java developer from being terrorized by Microsoft.
