CA has plenty without Enron around
... and besides, CA has so many people in it that laws passed there have a trickle-down effect. Noticed that more credit card receipts block out all but the last four digits of your card number? I believe that law originated in CA and isn't national, but it's just easier to sell machines everywhere with that feature, and these days it's pretty much a demanded thing anyway with identity theft so prevalent.

Some states also use CARB rules to set emissions limits for cars, which is why CA isn't the only state where the VW TDI is unavailable (until VW revises its exhaust systems to get particulate emissions under the new EPA limits... something I'm quite upset at VW for not having done sooner.)

That "you must tell people when you lose their data" law CA passed is resulting in all these massive disclosures in other states too because people start saying "hey wait, I don't live in CA, but what about me?" and so companies pretty much have to spill the whole beans whenever they lose info.
