So, people apparently could just send an e-mail (I'm assuming this was the case...since the article references IP addresses), request call loginformation, and AT&T just handed it over?

This, coupled with the NSA fiasco (and AT&T trying to wiggle out under an obscure technicality) really leave me with a very poor impression about how this company is run.
