People are used to being ripped off.
These companies are just taking advantage of the fact. They are also using the power of monopoly and their tremendous influence with regulators and politicians.

Where I live, there is no competition: you have to pay ATT (the old SWB) whatever they want. You have to pay Time-Warner whatever they want. Those two control all the regulators and legislators. If there's any competition between the two, it is for a purely nominal segment of the revenue "pie". Not that many people have the option between DSL and Broadband cable, actually you are lucky if you have even a *single* possible broadband service available.
