The "cost" associated with me to private companies has no bearing on taxes. That is part of their business. When I make a purchase, I cost that company just as much as the Working Guy does. Actually, if I purchase alot at once, I cost them less than Working Guy, who is only buying one thing. The "overhead" is spread out among hundreds of people. Just like Krogers stays open 24 hours because of the few people that shop in the wee hours of the morning. They cost more so should Kroger charge more for the same product at night?

Insurance companies are a bad example because everyone gets screwed no matter what. Working Guy is required by law to carry a minimum liability. If Working Guy also totals someone elses car, it does cost the insurance company money. Now, a few wrecks will not raise the premiums of everyone. It is when a whole area starts costing more that they raise rates for that area. The same thing happens with house taxes when developers start building expensive houses. I am currently fighting our tax board because they think my house is worth more than it is. If I could get someone to buy it for the price they say, I would sell it in a heartbeat

You COST the system more because you HAVE more.
However, with a sales tax based tax I would pay more because I purchased more. Working Guy would end up paying less because he buys less. And the rich would pay more. The problem with an Income Tax is that the wealthy have the means to use the loopholes so they don't pay as much. Those of us in the middle class don't so we end up paying a big portion of taxes. With a sales tax based tax, the only loophole is to not purchase anything.
