If helping people who need help were voluntary, I'd be more sympatetic with your sentiments. But it's not voluntary. Governments demand my money and distribute it as they please to achieve their purposes, and since, according to the New York Times, 80% of the US Federal budget is spent on entitlement programs, I'm sure many of the beneficiaries of their largess are not people I would choose to help.

Voluntarily, out of a sense of compassion, helping people who need it is one thing; helping politicians buy their own re-elections by giving away other peoples' money is something else entirely.
