For the sake of argument, let's say Willy Gates makes only $10 million a year. Now, let's compare him to a Working Poor Guy who makes only $10 thousand a year.

Also, for the sake of argument, let's say we have an across-the-board 75% tax rate. After taxes, Willy has $2.5 million, Working Poor Guy has $2,500.

If Working Poor Guy has a Honda Civic, getting 30 mi/gal, and drives the national average of around 12,000 miles a year, then at 3 bucks a gallon he'll spend (12,000 / 30) * 3 = $1,200, or 48%, almost HALF, of his yearly salary AFTER TAXES for JUST GAS. The $1,200 amounts to 0.048% (less than 1/2 of 1/100th of 1 percent) of Willy's salary.

See why you want to have either a sliding percentage scale on taxes (preferable) or a flat tax?

Jeesh.
