UMMMMM... all EBAY would have to do is modify the SKYPE protocol every once in a while to break the illegitimate apps functionality. People would get tired of having to wait for China to RE-reverse engineer the new protocol and would eventually dump any product that uses it.

Personally, I never have to worry about anyone trying to crack the service I use; it's called POTS and it only costs me $9/month on ULTS.

Also, VOIP service is dependant on your CABLE COMPANY or T1/T3 provider as well as your electric company to be UP and functional; When they are DOWN, so is your phone service.

When CHARTER CABLE was down (which happened with annoying regularity) or if the power failed, I could/can still receive & make calls by just picking up the phone handset. (:

As for (free) Long Distance, that's what all those otherwise unused minutes on my Celfone are for. (:
