If you don't do anything outside the box you will be fine, in a windows enviroment this is almos imposible (but as a low level coder I've seen many BSOD), but in Linux, going outside the box is not only possible but encouraged, so it's easier for regular joe to mess with the system, because they CAN!!, that's is the bauty of FOSS, be able of mesing with it, to go as far as you want in the direction you want and as long as you know what you're doing you will fine.

In the other side (win) you only can go as far as the system allows you, you canot see beyond the window, as a horse with cups over his eyes won't go away, he'll wait for the next command and obey, because he's in the dark. Of course this is safer, but it'll never be better.

And as many other have said, use a distro, they have made the hardpart and they are very solid, no kernel panic, except with buggy hardware, but they will tell something is wrong, not just freeze.
