Any trained pilot knows how to handle instrument failure. And no, an aircraft won't nosedive because of an instrument failure.

Are people really naive enough to think that an airplane is designed to fall out of the sky whenever something goes wrong?

I'd give the engineers a bit more credit than that.

That's not to say, however that cell phones don't affect aircraft. Only that pilots and aircraft can deal with it.
