Razr Madness
Is the Razr really junk? No. When it first was released by T-Mobile on the East Coast, it was $800. At that, any and all mobile phones are junk. But when I bought mine it was my 5th personal--I'm leaving out work phones...as a newspaper writer at one of the largest newspapers in the land you'd think we'd have a fleet of decent phones; alas, no!) mobile phone since the wonderful tank Sprint used for the first PCS phone ever released.

Is the Razr something amazing, though? No.

But it is a good phone. It has been solid and, of all the phones I've experimented with (many of which when I covered the telecommunications industry) it does the basic jobs of a mobile phone better than any in recent memory. It has worked flawlessly across the world, from Jakarta, Indonesia to South Bend, Indiana to the boondocks of Cambodia.

As a device to give you some features of, say, an iPod or an IPAQ, of course the phone is "junk." But the phone wasn't made for that.

It was made to do the basics--and just a little more--perfectly.

I apologize for rambling on here. Drop it, you say?

I've dropped the phone so many times you'd wonder if I did it on purpose.

And get this: It works as well as it did from day one.

All the best, y'all.
