- There were some other mediums that used to be 'neutral'
-
They were called 'Radio' and 'Television'.
Remember what happened to those?
Basically the same thing that happened to those two mediums is now beginning to happen to the internet. Through careful legislation and enforcement, they will eventually make it so that only the big guys can play as content providers on the internet.
Think Im wrong? Try doing what millions of people do daily on the internet with their blogs with radio or television. If you put up a transmitter strong enough to even broadcast to your neighbors house, the FCC will be all over you like white on rice.
The telecoms see a way to start making bigger profits by charging the major players more money for preferred access. What this will do to the internet is what clearchannel has done to radio and what the major networks have done to TV.
As far as the spokesperson for the telecoms crying about how consumers wont have competitive access to the video services we have apparently come to expect (what services are they talking about, anyway?), maybe they should get into another business.
The last time I checked, making in an investment in infrastructure for future demand (bandwidth, in this case) was called 'the cost of doing business'. Apparently thats not the case anymore, and they now want to get the government to let them skew the playing field in order to let them make the profits up front before any of said infrastructure is even built out.
Sorry guys, Im not buying it, and neither are other Americans. If this passes, I'll cancel my internet service the day it happens and I hope millions of others will too. - Posted by: pir8matt Posted on: 05/22/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
