In this game, spectrum is god
They've got 2.5 GHz liceneses. End of story... almost. Yes, they'll actually have to satisfy customers and can't count on media-buzz alone for profits. The liceneses, as we all know, are very expensive and very hard to come by, but when the dust settles, the spectrum holders will have the biggest cells, the best coverage, and will have bought out everyone who deployed unlicensed. The experience they bring to the mobile game puts them in exactly the right place to be a big player in 802.16e deployments in the next few years. Also the 3.5 GHz holdings in Europe give them another market to lean on while they wait for ROI on going with the newest technology to offer their service. Of course they lost money last year... CPE prices for WiMAX gear (that I've been looking at anyways) are still up around the $600 - $800 range. That's a capital expense per customer that must be dealt with over a couple years of recurring revenues.

In the absolute least, because of their liceneses, they're poised to be bought out for big $$ in a bidding war (just like McCaw's cell service was. do we notice a pattern?)
