Visto wins patent suit, plans to challenge RIM

I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but...

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a lawyer, I have no idea what the patents referred to in this story are supposed to cover, and I really don't care who wins this any of the cases mentioned.

However, it doesn't look to me like this case and the NTP suit against RIM are analagous. I looked up NTP's web site, and it looks like the only products they even talk about concern data storage - not exactly what the RIM suit was about. So my opinon of NTP is pretty low: they're pretty clearly patent trolls, trying to make a buck without making any products.

Visto, on the other hand, actually does make products in the wireless e-mail space. In fact, the only products listed on their web site are about wireless e-mail/calendars/etc. This sets them apart from NTP - maybe their patents are valid, and maybe they're not, I have no idea, but they certainly are not just sitting on them hoping to make a buck from lawsuits alone. It's possible that they're really trying to defend their patent-protected product line which they are really selling with the intent to make money, like real companies do. At least that's what it looks like upon cursory investigation.

Alright, go ahead, flame away - I'm wearing my asbestos BVDs today.
