Control, not neutrality
AT&T and Verizon are the last of the old Ma Bell POTS companies, getting desperate to hold on to what little control they have left over the net. They realize that POTS is on its way out in favor of broadband, and they want to be certain they can profit off it by controlling access.

What better way to exercise that position than by threatening the biggest websites (Google and Yahoo) with extra charges for "being the biggest bandwith hogs." I don't think bandwith has anything to do with what the POTScos are planning.

"And we won't change (our position) no matter what sky-is-falling rhetoric you hear. Markets work best when consumers have choices."
Translation: Our way, or do without. Great choices! silly
I already hear the stampede storming from the POTScos to other ISPs (tell me they're not all hearding for AOL). The POTScos won't be around much longer (I'll give them till 2015). Consider this the big nail in their coffin.
