Whitacre, who had been quoted in news reports as saying he didn't think companies such as Google should be given a "free ride" on his network...

This is nonsense. If Google is getting a "free ride" then so is every person who sends an email to a AT&T account holder from their own, different ISP. They don't pay AT&T but they are using AT&T bandwidth.


AT&T and Verizon Communications, are planning to create a tiered Internet system that would require big bandwidth hogs like Google or Yahoo to pay more for their access...

They are bandwidth hogs now? Seems to me they load nice, tight, text-heavy, image-light web pages. That's hogging?
