- WiMAX is only last mile (or 1.616 km)
- The telecom companies (who will be providing the WiMAX service and connecting backbone, btw) maintain the backbone (OC-48 cables, etc.) that connect things like the lines under the oceans, links between cities, secure backbones, links for hosting providors and corporations. You realy need to get out and learn about the telecommunications infrastructure (both wired and wireless). I say this as one who has not had a wire line for about 4 years (telecommunications) and don't even connect my laptop by Cat5 unless in an office (WiMAX will be in laptops and phones around 2007, according to Intel and Nokia, the companies that will make it possible).
