Indeed.... No doubt.... Absolutely.... What No_Ax said...
To say, in this day and age, that phone lines are required for communication is pure ignorance. As No_Ax points out, there is the feasibility of WiMax. There are also those little things in the sky called satellites. My boss lives in a rural area. He has satellite internet and it works quite well.

More than any of that, what really frosts my arse is that they are trying to play this out like we need to help our farmer's communicate and modernize. Well, we do need to help them (perhaps).

The problem is that more than the farmers, the people really being subsidized are all the twits that go out in the country and build their $300K+ house after buying up a piece of that farmer's land. Every day they hop in their friggin SUV and burn up a boatload of of gas driving too and from work. Well, excuuuse me for thinking that this type of yo-yo doesn't deserve any government subsidies. If they want to "get away" from society, they should have to pay the price, including footing the bill for their own form of communication.
