Most Americans would think nothing of lying, scheming, conniving, etc. no matter how much it disadvantaged their fellow Americans if they thought it'd get them ahead, provide them with more money, etc. In that sense, they are very similar to politicians.
Perhaps Americans allow all sorts of crime and corruption to go on in the federal government because they themselves are up to many of the same underhanded shenanigans in their own lives, and if the opportunity came about, would gladly easily shuffle everyone else off the table if they were in a position to do so and run off with all the loot, girlies, and power. wink
