... to buy 5% of AOL, which is not a separate company from Time Warner and doesn't have its own stock. The $300 million is described as credits for AOL to advertise on Google, as you say.

Buying loyalty, even benevolence rarely works. Look at executive compensation.

I still think AOL decided to go for free money instead of looking for a way to grow its business or cut costs.

Google made another deal like the one with Sun, except this one cost money.
