Rethink Digital Data Protection Schemes
I think it is okay for MS to promote the use of DRM schemes for allowing consumers to sample digital media. But I think MS should also look at making digital content that people purchase and use privately, traceable ? using watermarking or some other scheme. I believe if MS does this, it will allow it to overtake Apple quicker in the digital entertainment market ? and people will really appreciate the freedom its alternate anti-piracy scheme gives them. Using a whole bunch of DRM schemes and restrictive laws from Congress will actually slow the use of digital content ? and could lead to a lot of people trying to thwart these protection schemes, so as to be able to use their digital data freely. The overreaction from content providers is a little bit understandable: but I think content providers should step back and look for alternate solutions that protect themselves, while giving consumers the maximum amount of freedom to use digital content freely and privately.
