Voting, Markets, Monopolies, and MS
Yup, I'll vote against government funded broadband. That being said, if the majority of the people in a city vote for it, then I guess the people have spoken and once again proven their collective intelligence. Democracy is something that should be done half way, I'll take the good with the bad.

If a monopoly exists, chances are the market is failing and the government needs to do something. However, I don't think MS is a monopoly, just a company that engages in anti-competitive practices and would desparately like to be one. I also think people tend to declare monopolies too soon. A lot of people thought IBM was a monopoly, and look what happened.

Anyway, IMHO, the government should never services that are readily available commericially. I would rather the government send every citizen a $35 check every month with the suggestion that the citizen use it to buy broadband than have the government buy broadband. Why? Because I think 99.9999% of the people in the US who don't have broadband don't value it, so why should my tax dollars go towards providing someone with an unwanted service. At least if the government is handing out checks I can assume people will use the money to buy things they actually need/want.
