That's becasue we have rural areas... unlike... err... Canda?
It's just the Bells price gouging consumers. There are so many alternatives that can use existing DSLAM and copper lines. But hey, why bother? They're making a killing by still charging $20/month for 56k DIALUP and $120/month for dual channel ISDN.

Hell, even in Canada they're starting to get really nice broadband. So that "too many rural areas in America" crap is really getting old.

I think the idea is that if Americans are used to paying $60/month for a 3m/384k DSL, think how much they could charge for a (relatively) normal connection of 6m/768k (gods, I REALLY hate that limited upstream crap.) Oh, I know. They're already offering it. $120/month. *sighs*

Meanwhile, my mate in France has a 8Mb/2Mb for 40 Euro/month.
