Cingular vs. VerizonWireless
I use VerizonWirelesss BroadbandAccess and I love it. I'm surprised Cingular was able to match the speed of EV-DO. The question is, is the bandwidth/throughput consistent? That's where wireless internet is really weak. You'll go from 400kbs to 700kbs to 100kbs, etc. Not very good for video conferencing. Signal performance is important too. I remember Sprint's wireless cards needed at least 2 bars in order to make a connection, and even then the speed was really low with such a signal (maybe it's still the case?). But with Verizon, if I have one bar, i'm good to go...and the speed is still good. And what about coverage? If wireless broadband isn't avaialble everywhere your carrier has a signal, you can't really rely on it. Sure, both networks allow for gearing back to the slower sleepds (1xRTT or EDGE, which are similar to each other in speed) but then pricing should be flexible to reflect connection time to the broadband network, and connection time to the "narrowband" network. That would be the fair thing to do. Right now Verizon covers a lot more of the country with its BroadbandAccess than Cingular does. We'll have to see whose network provides the most consistent throughput. Then we'll also see the price wars begin. Most exciting!
