Money v. Having to learn geek speak
Unfortunately, building a computer by yourself is a huge chore for the non-computer savvy people. The number of choices for motherboards, processors, ram, hard drives, video cards, cases, ect., can drive people mad.

And then, interoperability between them. Does this motherboard support this processor or that RAM? What type of PCU do I need to drive this sucker (and what the hell is a PCU anyway)? And so on.

That's why Dell/Gateway/Compaq do so well. People would rather spend a couple hundred to a couple thousand more, than an extra week or two trying to understand geek speak.
