Alternatives to VOIP E911
1. Even without E911 support, Vonage (for instance) phones will
still reach 911. Up for discussion is the "enhanced" 911 service,
not basic 911 service. For instance, you would still have to tell
the emergency personnel where you are.

2. Did you know that you can call 911 from any land line or
mobile phone in the US even if you don't subscribe to service?
Keep a charged mobile phone handy or plug your old phone into
the wall and use it for emergencies. Paint it red if you want.

3. If you have a lot of guests, babysitters, etc., put a sticker on
your VOIP phone saying "DOES NOT GIVE ADDRESS TO 911. USE
BIG RED PHONE IN KITCHEN". If you have a babysitter coming
over often, instruct them on the differences between the phones.
Write your address on the VOIP phone so that even if someone
DOES use the phone, the only time it will make a critical
difference is if for some reason they are unable to speak and
give their location.

I'm not saying E911 wouldn't be nice, but the POTS system is
regulated to give almost everyone in the country the ability to
get a land line. There are also mobile phone options for almost
everyone. If you get a VOIP phone, and understand and are OK
with the consequences, I don't see why we need the FCC or any
other government agency "protecting" us any further.
