how is broadband access different from telephone service

The original purpose was to provide telephone service where there was none. Telephone service could be considered a vital necessity, I suppose, but you can hardly claim the same for broadband service.

And in this case, broadband would replace an already available option: Dial up.

I pay for my broadband. Nobody subsidized the infrastructure required for it, nor is my bill lessened by government subsidy.

So why should I be expected to pony up for someone out in BF Egypt?
