Very interesting....
...another society opening itself to the world. I visited Hanoi in 1991, and after 25 years of recovering from the previous century of chaos brought on by various occupations (French, Japanese, American), they appeard to be regaining some semblance of national stability and cultural identity. It was a wonderous thing to sit in one of their new internet cafes, surf the web, and check my email back home while gazing out over the sea of motorbikes on the streets outside. Much to my surprise, there was absolutely no animosity I could detect concerning the devastation we had visited on them during "the American war" as they referred to what we call the Vietnam war. In their eyes it was just the latest in a long string of foreign occupations, which they eventually overcame. Most of the people with whom I came in contact were more interested in moving on, now that their liberation had been secured, even though virtually every family there had lost someone in the various forms of destruction that had been visited on them. I assume that there has been some reconciliation between the Vietnamese-Americans and the home country, with perhaps(?) some of them going home to help out with the reconstruction.
