Opt out if other conditions are met
They didn't even try.

Google is caching content by 3rd parties. Amazon gets theirs directly from the publisher. Google is also caching the entire book. Doesn't matter if a few sentences are displayed to the public from each phrase even though it is a few sentences per page. Since they are supposed to be indexing, fair use will not cover them. Indexing is only small snippets of info from the book. Those thumbnails from Arriba are indexes. They do not show the whole picture because of loss of detail. A picture is worth a 1000 words. The thumbnail is worth 50 tops.

I would go to my library and do it properly with more accuracy. A research paper I would not trust two sentences to anyway.

Opt out is fine if you can. Those copyrighted books in the library cannot be done thru another party. I also read where google can read the barcode on the book identifier and not display those copyrighted books.

Parts blocked off.

Google is downloading material and the library is uploading. Same thing. When you cache a website you are downloading data in the google servers.

Providing text from a movie is only part of the works. I should have seen this argument ahead of time. Do works on a book only.

Happens all the time. If I give a lot of data to someone who writes favorable about my works and ignore those that critize me, it is legal. If you obtain massive quantities of my work to critize it, you can go over the fair use limitations. But I could give you massive quantities (over the fair use umbrella)to say something favorable to give you a leg up on your competition. Maybe this is why the critics get it all wrong.

Yes there is.

The college intranet will influence it. Colleges plays favorites also.

And everyone signed and agreed with one another and are not at the mercy of some college's discretion. 2 of the 4 colleges have agreed not to put the copyrighted books online.

It is more complicated on the web. There is more data but it is less accurate and repeated.

Actually, the web is larger thru massive repetition and amature feedback. Google will add to the clusterf*ck. I usually would ask the clerk to see if a book is available in the past. Not everything is on the web.

No they never did. But this whole argument is about others putting your work on the web.

Did they delete from cache also? wink

Got you.

And you accused me of mind reading. I couldn't even find this argument on slashdot or linuxworld or any other anti-old way of doing things.

They do have a database of what is out there. I bought a book thru Waldenbooks they didn't carry 15 years ago.

But there is also more to that in here. Copyright law requires permission unless fair use kicks in. Copying the entire book is not allowed on fair use when you are arguing the index angle. And it doesn't matter if you keep the contents for internal use only.
