Where is that right guaranteed?
---They are running roughshod over their way of marketing
their books. They have a right to control the way their book is
being marketing. Google is undermining that control by doing it
Google's way.---

Funny, I don't remember seeing any law that guaranteed a
company the right to control the way their book is marketed, or
talked about. A bad review is horrible for marketing--does a
company have a right to sue to stop a bad review? Can the
company sue a library to stop them from including it in their
collection (as that might hurt sales)? Can a company stop
Publisher's Weekly from listing the release of their new book?

The answer to all of these questions is NO. There is no
guaranteed right to control the world.

---Maybe the books you publish the authors do not give a damn
or they like the way you do it. I bet your company does an
inquire about their preferences on how to publish it. I would out
of respect of my customers.---

Here's a great quote on the subject from teh LA Times:
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-op-
mediavore25sep25,0,4447438.story

"fear of obscurity, not digital indexing, is what keeps most
authors awake at night."

---The fact of the matter is Google didn't get permission from
the authors to do this. I read elsewhere in reply to Rapson on the
irony of this. He was right that it should be opt in instead of opt
out. No exceptions. Companies have the right to make stupid
decisions to go out of business. Your company might find value
in this, but not all companies see it your way. I really don't think
Google will help them that much. An unpopular book will be at
the bottom of the search results anyway. And a popular book
will not need Google that much.---

Google does not need their permission to do this. Do I need a
publisher's consent to include a book in my library card catalog?
It falls under fair use, and the AAP and the Author's Guild are
wasting their time and their money, and only hurting those they
claim to represent. Regardless of the quality of the book,
anything that makes it easier to find the book will increase its
sales.

If anyone is running roughshod here, it's the AAP and the
Author's Guild, who are trying to stop the profits of their own
members.
