Both they're different applications
WIMAX is a broadband WAN solution.

802.11n is a LAN solution.

There's not much overlap, some places might deploy WIMAX on a campus instead of 802.11n but it's wireless equivalent of deploying T1's to communicate over distances less than a kilometer.

WIMAX is a way of giving the internet in an area not conductive to ADSL/CABLE/etc but it's not designed to be used in buildings to provide wireless access on a work floor. Both technologies will be used side by side in the near future, maybe their replacement will combine the bennefits of both into one technology.
