It will definitely work provided it gets proper industry support.
I have heard naysaying about many technologies that were difficult to introduce. I can remember when .13micron processes were thought to be a pipe dream. I can even remember when 100MHz processors were thought to be a doomed, innefficient proposition.
The problems that face powerline broadband are not simple ones, but if there are enough companies who realize the potential this has for rural America, it will come into being. If the signals can be produced with a certain footprint that active filtering technologies can recognize and separate from general noise, and a standard is adopted for this practice, it is a given. I do, however, realize that those are both very big 'if's', but there have been bigger ones. I once wouldn't have thought that I would ever be using a 1mbit connection at home without even tying up my phone line, but I do.
I am working on a plan to add WiFi to the area where I live, and I certainly plan to include plans to incorporate this brilliant new technology as soon as I can. There will be pitfalls along the way, but it will smooth over in time and those who are in it now will reap the benefits later on.
