Yo Dave, Lighten Up!
Wow, Dave! You sound more like you'r talking about your ex-wife than a former place of residence!

First of all, recognize that everyone in power -- public or private sector -- is corrupt. Enron? Tyco? HealthSouth? Worldcom? Adelphia? Diogenes would need more than a candle to find his honest man today.

Second, Philadelphia is talking about $18 million to do this project citywide. That's chump change compared to virtually ANYTHING that is done in a city of 1+ million people. Worst case, that's a cheap failure.

Best case? Best case -- it will force the big private scoundrels -- Comcast and Verizon -- to temper their rate increases. My microeconomics professor 100 years ago told his classes that the best way for government to regulate monopolistic industries, whether oil companies, utilities, or telco providers, was to go into their businesses and compete with them.

It's no wonder that the phone and cable companies are pulling the strings behind every legislator they own to prevent government sponsored wi-fi from happening. It will force them to be competitive instead of operating in their usual money-grabbing mode.
