- Stupid, greedy communications companies...

If the cable and phone companies didn't keep RAPING the public on the cost of broadband, all this free, city-wide WiFi network business wouldn't be such an issue to begin with.
Once again, big business is looking at only the SHORT-TERM loss from forward-looking public works projects for the information age... Doubtless, entire cities that offer free Wifi will also increase business for the other services in ways they may not even be able to imagine at this point... For one thing, while I may take advantage of a roaming WiFi link to be able to surf the web as I strolled around Philly, that certainly wouldn't mean I wouldn't STILL want my own, dedicated, fastest-as-possible, FIREWALLED cable connection at home, like I have now (and pay THROUGH THE NOSE for).
What it MIGHT mean is that instead of paying like $50 a month for my current 3 Mbps cable service, ON TOP of another $15 a month for AOL, just because I LIKE all the conveniences of AOL, my cable service might drop to $30, or so, with more competition... But then economies of scale come into play, as more people would buy the service if it were cheaper.
Our current economic structure, where "capitalism" seems to never look any further than the next quarter's earnings (if that far) is BADLY FLAWED... Everyone needs to start looking at the long haul, and the BIG PICTURE, as, thankfully, the "City of Brotherly Love" is in its pioneering efforts.
