The telcos a doing just fine!
The land line telcos provide backbone service over long distances (ever heard of OC cables?). The cellular providors (that have not been grabbed by the old wireline telcos) are also doing fi-fi service. Ever heard of Yozan (Tokyo) or T-Mobile (Deutscheland, service in the US), both are telcos?
