After all we've seen of every small, temporary sign of life in the Linux desktop being treated as the moment of triumph, the lesson has to be avoiding premature declarations of success.

The newest "Mission accomplished" moment could come with these municipal projects. A couple of relevant quotes provide context:

First,
Intel, which has been an advocate for municipal wireless networks for several years, is also working closely with Muniwireless.com, an online site devoted to municipal wireless broadband, to help develop case studies focused on Wi-Fi network development.

So the advocates don't have case studies to work with are devising their own.

Second,
Communities are going to have a hard time persuading their constituents that bridging the digital divide or free Wi-Fi on Main Street are worthwhile uses of tax dollars," said Ask. "However, when you mix in a long list of benefits--some quantifiable and some more qualitative--it's a lot easier to get to the point where folks think, 'Yeah, this makes sense.'"

Or not.
Means there's no support and no eagerness, so a campaign to communicate the benefits will be necessary.
The alternative is the existing system, which, for municipal services, is already in place. And the competition in residences and businesses is the established firms. Which are using pricing and their own campaigns and their own WiFi offerings to protect their situation.

Sounds uphill to me.
