Ask IEEE
Since the IEEE has STILL not released the final WiMAX spec, I doubt you will see any WiMAX on the streets. InHell has a demo PRE-WiMAX product for developers - that's about it for WiMAX.

[WiMAX is last mile, a mesh newtork of WiFi is better as people actually use WiFi now (in laptops, phones, PC's, etc.). Until WiMAX (or a derivative) is internal to these devices (that consumers use) it is of no concern.]

A "last mile" network is a STAR network. With a mesh, there IS no last mile - everyone is a node and the traffic can flow in any direction.

[A WiFi mesh actually provides access to anyone with a device that understand WiFi, WiMAX is for last mile thus being of limited use to the average city dweller.]

WiFi's range is too small to be a "real" mesh. You end up with a "puffy"/"dandelion" network where a bunch of nodes in a small area are connected by long haul wires.

Yes a meshing network is independent of the implementation.

My main point is that by the time you complet a WiFi network with many hot spots and miles of long haul wires, WiMAX will be available and you COULD have used 10 times less equipment.
