The telcos have not learned their lesson. People are leaving them in droves for cable/VoIP. The problem with POTS is ala carte pricing. Their $29.95/month deal looks good until you find out that voicemail is and extra 7 bucks, and 3-way calling is .75 a pop. This stuff is all included in Vonage!
The telcos are finished. In order to keep up with VoIP, they need to offer the same level of service. BUT their infrastructure is much more expensive, so keeping up with the Joneses will bleed them dry.
The WiMAX steamroller will also roll them flat. Once broadband is wireless, there is no need for ANY wires in a house (save electric). The telcos will be left with trillions of miles of wires and switches that won't be used anymore. I can see the long trail of tears leading to the US Congress in a few short years. Bye, bye telcos! You won't be getting your three digit monthly blackmail from me (or anyone else) anymore!
