RE "I *CAN* believe it!"

Uhhh... i hate to tell you this, but the Telco guys are going to be whupping a** in a few years or sooner once they deploy FIOS service, base service of $40 a month will be 5 meg down and 2 meg up, you can pay more for more upload speed, but for most a 40% of the download speed as a upload speed is actually really good. Because that's actually a lot cheaper then having a full blown T-1.

So i wouldn't start calling bluff just yet, because telco's don't want to spend money on DSL when they are installing FIOS service. FIOS can go alot further then DSL service can, plus the capacity is far superior then copper. They could pump throught 1 GBps or more, ergo the reason that they are going to deploy TV, Phone and Internet from the same pipe.

Well I don't know if you've checked cellphones lately, but I get about as good a connection with tin-cans and waxed string. AND, if someone's driving through, roaming, they'll just CUT OFF my call, so they can make more money.

Why do Americans put up with it?

We've not worked hard enough to shout for these changes from the rooftops. Changes like these are major for people trying to stay afloat, much less amortize the last go-round of infrastructure upgrades.

What they need to do is look at Japan. See what operationally works best of the newest technologies, and not tell anyone about the service until they've had time to re-build the parts. Then, they're the early-adopter, skipping several levels of technology and outpacing the competition.

Once the competition runs out of waxed string, the fun begins.
