I suspect the cable industry is in for a rude awakening ...
The cable operators are used to majoring on content and minoring on infrastructure. They have been loathe to make significant infrastructure improvements and are used to making lush profits on their current content delivery monopoly. But when content delivery moves off onto the internet and people are no longer receiving content 'in sync' as they now do with conventional cable service, the existing cable infrastructure is likely to fail under the load. If they are to be successful in the new landscape, they are simply going to have to use tighter ethernet loops and feed them with fat fiber trunks. Thats my perception. If they start advertising huge speed boosts and they can't deliver, they are going to look really bad, just like the telcos did when they screwed up with DSL by not being able to keep up with orders. There are a number of websites out there where you can actually test the speed of your connection. I would advise all users to take advantage of one of those and see if you are actually getting what you are paying for. Check out: http://www.broadbandreports.com for example.
