You got that right
For a period of time while I was switching from cable to dsl, I
had both cable modem service (from the big "C") and Bellsouth
DSL.

Advertised cable speed was much faster than the advertised
2.8MB dsl but dsl was consistently faster (tested on the same
sites at the same time). Why?

IMO, because the cable company routinely oversells its service.
At least on my segment. The only time that cable came close to
advertised speed was in the summer when most of the college
students were out of town. Let's not even get into the frequent
cable outages (DNS, etc.)

It's time for the big cable isps to shake loose some of their rusty
money and invest in infrastructure - and administrators who
have a clue what they are doing.
