Advertised speeds mean little ... its more marketing than technology
In the pre-broadband era, modem manufacturers boldly claimed higher and higher speeds even as the infrastructure itself proved unable to deliver them. Now the same drill is being repeated. The pipe to the home is not the big limitation. Even a telco's twisted pair can carry enormous amounts of data if pushed to the limit. The real limitation is in the network itself. Once you have a multitude of households transfering huge gobs of data simultaneously, the network in question is going to be very stressed and that will have a huge impact on the actual bandwidth delivered to the end user. Standby for disappointments ahead.
