Cable and Phone co's will still add charges
In order for these networks to access the wider-area networks, the phone and cable companies will have to permit them to connect to their lines. When that happens, they will charge enough so as to make the municipal network non-competitive. They will make their money one way or another.
The long term benefit will be in local communications.
As for me, on the other hand, I'm for anything that gives the phone and cable monopolies some competition (even though the pessimist in me doesn't think it will work in this case). Look at how cell phones have caused Bell to come up with more competitive pricing. The cable companies are the ones that really need some competition now. They have been gouging us for many years. I'd like to see a law mandating at least two cable television providers in every community.
