Flawed analogies

I think your analogy of someone entering your house is flawed in
this case. The person in question is in a public area, in the
middle of the street in this case. The couch is also a bad
analogy, as it's something that's deliberately being given away.

Perhaps a better analogy--you have something of value, let's say
a diamond ring. You leave it in the middle of the street. Should
you be upset if someone comes along and takes it? Would that
be considered stealing, if you left it sitting there, unprotected in
public?

It's still not a great analogy, because in this place, the person
taking does actually ask permission, through his computer
asking yours for permission to join the network.

So to extend the analogy, you leave your diamond ring in the
middle of the street. Your kids are playing in the front yard.
John Doe comes walking down the street, sees the ring and asks
your kids, "Can I have this?" Your kids say, "Yes."

Is this stealing?
