You have answered your question. The idea of theft only matters if you you care - thats right. I leave my old couch outside my house so someone can benefit from it and take it away. Its useless to me but may be useful to somebody. The person picking-up the couch is not stealing it. Same way my unused bandwidth is of no use to me - so I give it to community.

As for not knowing how to secure it: even a child can setup password based security. If you don't I would assume that you don't care.

If you know how wireless handshaking occurs, you would not be asking this. Someone already explained this above but i'll do it again for you. The guest computer requests the connection and hosts grants that connection. All done without human intervention. Again No breaking into your house analogy - you requested and you were granted access.
