I've been following and waiting for this one
This has to do with the cable industry's court ruling that the "cable giants" offer an "information transfer" service and not a public phone system.

Verizon is now poised to jump on this ruling and argue that it's DSL is ALSO the same thing. DSL has a tax that is put on them because they are considered a "phone company". VoIP (internet telephone like the cable companies use) was never considered to be regular phone utility service ... therefore it was immune to the tax.

Now, your politicians (in all their amazing glory) will fight to collect taxes from VoIP rather than drop taxes from DSL .....

would you have expected anything different????
